Work Description: Not to code, fire-hazard, requires expensive fixes
Comments: Lies, poor quality work, and now a legal processOutcome: Unfortunately, in addition to the epic disappointment of this whole project, we now have to go to mediation to recover losses.
Work: In spite a detailed contract and email/text, Cris consistently used the incorrect materials in our project, including the wrong grout, cheaper/inferior shower doors, damaged tiles on shower walls and floors. He grouted poorly with parts missing and sharp protruding spacers. He installed obviously defective carpet. He did not replace damaged baseboards as contracted. He installed flooring that bows/cracks. He installed the wrong style and color of transitions which are now ripping away from the floor. The transitions were not installed under the door because he cut the floorboards too short during installation. Ultimately, Cris did not complete the project and now it has to be fixed by another contractor who was so outraged by what he saw that he offered to testify in court.
Admin: Cris was completely unable to retain information on materials selected, even when sent repeatedly in emails, text, and confirmed in person. Cris’ wife sometimes intervened and working with her was the best part of the whole project. Cris also incorporated his young son, unbeknownst to me, who made inappropriate product and installation recommendations.
Communication: Cris repeatedly promised and failed to send us change orders in spite of persistent requests. Later, he attempted to coerce me into signing change orders for work never done, materials never used, and thousands of dollars over our agreement. He lies about everything, most especially the work he’s capable of doing. He had no idea how to install the floors we wanted, but said that he could and then did them so poorly we will have to have them replaced. He wired items in the bathroom incorrectly and used a light strip in the shower that is not rated as any level of water resistant or water proof. The project exceeded the timeline and cost us an additional $5K. When we inquired about the timeline, Cris promised it would be done on time, early even. Then Cris tried to tell me that the delays were caused on my end, but when I deferred him to the emails in which I clearly identified the materials selected and condo building video footage showing that our condo sat empty for days on end, he altered his accusations to say that his vendors let him down. This too is a lie as I have text messages and emails from him indicating when the materials were ordered, which was weeks after the selection was made.
Personal Drama: Cris clearly sustained a life-altering injury that cause burns across his entire body. Perhaps because he knows that my husband and I are both veterans and empathetic, he concocted a story of how he was a PJ in the AirForce and sustained his injury while rescuing someone in the Gulf War. This is categorically false. Not only was he not a PJ, his injuries were sustained much later in life. He told and retold this stolen valor story each time adding to it, riling against the injustice of the veteran health care, and even crying in my kitchen. Ultimately, none of his story is true. On at least one occasion, Cris called us with slurred speech, claiming to be “h!gh.” Cris is prone to high temper and overreaction, especially when is has noticeably lied himself into a corner.
Coercion: Although Cris agreed about the flooring, tile, shoddy work, and wrong materials, he went on to write a series of nasty text messages attempting to coerce me into paying money that he had forgotten I already paid via trackable, cashed checks. He sent us a close out contract with wrong dates, amounts paid/owed, manipulative wording around the change order he never send, and new agreements regarding future law suits. Clearly, he knew his work was subpar.
