Work Description: Garage to ADU Conversion
Comments: Unprofessional amateurs who seem to violate the law and cut corners as a matter of practice.Dragan Turkalj is the named contractor (Lic. No. 1102277-B) for a current (as of 5/30/24) garage to ADU conversion project in our neighborhood. Here's what we've witnessed so far:
Shortly after the project began, according to public records it seems that a building inspector visited the site, likely because of excessive noise (excessively loud music and demolition work not matching the published permit), we suspect a "stop work" may have been issued when the inspector discovered other unlawful practices (perhaps a lack of required insurance or illegal workers?) because they stopped working for a few weeks after the inspection. It also seems they now have less workers than the original large crew which appeared to include many day laborers.
They placed a porta-potty chemical toilet in the middle of the alley near the work site, obstructing traffic and creating a health and safety hazard to the community. They did not get a permit for the porta-potty, so thankfully LA 311 eventually removed the toilet from the alley (yes, LA 311 will tow the toilet for you).
The workers illegally park in the alley every single workday. At least one sadistic worker seems to think it's funny to block neighboring driveways so residents are trapped in their obnoxiously loud house (loud due to the construction) for several hours until LADOT Parking Authority shows up. We've called LADOT at least 4 times because we were trapped by the same car belonging to a worker from the site (silver Toyota Corolla with gaudy black and pink hubcaps). One day when we were finally able to leave our house after being held hostage for several hours, we drove past the site and we saw small children playing in the dirt on the work site (not teenagers or tweens, they were small children) and a woman was sitting in the corner and looked like she might be squatting at the work site at night or something.
I've worked in construction for more than a decade and I'm absolutely stunned by the complete lack of professionalism and the overt disrespect to the community that we've witnessed on this project. It's the most absurd display of professional incompetence I've ever seen in all my years as an engineer on construction sites.
Unlawful and short-sighted practices such as these can significantly delay your project and cause unnecessary and costly rework. Don't hire this guy for a remodel unless your "home remodeling goal" is really to maim a few children maybe, gain a stupid porta-potty story for parties, and make 100% certain that all of your neighbors hate you and won't invite you to their parties anyway. You deserve better than that.
I will be happy to remove this review if Dragan can figure out how to legally finish this project in the next 2-3 weeks and get his awful crew out of my neighborhood. Either way, I hope to continue updating this review as more unprofessional behavior is observed. If I catch anything juicy on camera, I'll figure out where to post that too.

Comments: Amazing project from David and Alex. Completely remodeled two dated bathrooms and they are now fabulous!! Team was amazing, hard working and professional. Great job scheduling and being flexible when we kept adding more scope! Attention to details and finishes. Highly recommend.-
