Work Description: Front Sidewalk, Driveway Apron, Retaining Wall, & 300' Driveway Curb.
Comments: I paid Jonathan Butler 50% ($7,450) up front on 8/31/24, with the balance due upon completion, with an agreed start of 1 week later. I began to worry it was a scam when he didn't show-up until 2 weeks late! But even after finally showing up the 1st day, it was many days before he returned, & this pattern has continued for almost 2 months, getting worse as time goes on & showing up only 1 day a week & many times with only 1 helper because he either can't get help or afford to pay them! 3-4 weeks after I paid him 50%, with none of the 4 projects completed yet, he asked me for a progress payment of 50% of the 2nd half payment that's was not due till completion! I foolishly gave him $2,500 to hopefully get him to show-up & finally finish the job! Instead I don't see him for days, and his favorite term is "I'm all tapped out" and needs more money from 2nd half amount for gas & to pay his workers, so he can come back! Basically extortion. I did everything I could to drag him to the finish line to get the job completed, including giving him lesser amounts of $1,000 , $500 , $500 , & recently $40 & $60 just for gas money to get here, which is 66 miles away, but he knew that from the start when he contacted me & I asked him if it was too far for him. Every time I gave him money, he did not show-up the next day, & many times for a number of days! The only time he came the next day with his wife as his helper, was about a 1.5 weeks ago when I paid him the $60, but started telling him he was forcing me to take legal action if he doesn't come & finish job. I'm not to the point of talking to my attorney about taking action. For the past 3-4 weeks I've even had to directly pay for a concrete pouring, 2 loads of lumber for forms, & my own concrete coloring stain mix from the remaining 2nd half amount, because he can't be trusted with money paid to him! Only completed the sidewalk, which looks good, the retaining wall, which serves its purpose but doesn't look very good, & has only completed 25% of the curb forms, & never started the driveway apron. Should have gone with the next lowest contractor that was $3k-$4k higher, but only pay upon job completion and would have the job done in 1 week with good weather!Alliance OH
