Now that you've got the furnace going full-blast and you've seen your latest power bill, you might be looking for a way to stay warm without spending as much. Have you checked your weatherstripping? Do you even have weatherstripping? On a windy day, inspect your windows and doors. If there's cold air coming in around the edges, it is time to redo or add some weatherstripping. A 1/8" space around a standard door is equivalent to a 2" hole in your wall. By weather-stripping any such gaps, you can save up to 30% on heating bills. And this is a project you can do yourself, probably for as little as $20.

Depending on the type of window or door you have, the installation will be different. To determine what type of weatherstripping is best for you (metal, rubber, felt, foam, vinyl or plastic), the US Department of Energy has come up with a handy guide. Generally, the idea is to clean the area around the window or door and wait until it dries. If you're using adhesive weatherstripping, measure and cut the amount you need and stick on the foam or felt strip. In some cases, you will have to nail down the strip, too. It's that easy.
